ICSA/IMA Health Clinic

Bringing Compassionate Healthcare to Underserved Communities

Introduction

The right to health is a basic human right — yet for many in South Africa’s underserved communities, access to quality healthcare remains out of reach. In areas where clinics are overcrowded, under-resourced, or too far away, preventable conditions often go untreated, leading to prolonged suffering or even loss of life.

In response to this need, the Islamic Circle of Southern Africa (ICSA) in collaboration with the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA), established the ICSA/IMA Health Clinic. Since its launch in 2019, the clinic has provided free medical check-ups and treatments to thousands of patients — offering dignity, relief, and hope to those who need it most.

Why the Health Clinic Matters

In communities such as Westbury, where unemployment, poverty, and substance abuse are rife, access to consistent and compassionate healthcare can be life-changing. The ICSA/IMA Health Clinic was created to serve these exact communities — not just as a place for medical treatment, but as a beacon of hope and service grounded in Islamic values and social justice.

Services Provided

The ICSA/IMA Health Clinic offers free primary healthcare services, with a focus on preventive care, early diagnosis, and accessible treatment.

Some of the key services include:

  • General Medical Consultations

For both acute and chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses.

  • Eye Screenings and Referrals

Patients with vision problems are screened and referred to specialists or the Cataract Project where needed.

  • Free Medication Distribution

Basic medications are dispensed on-site, reducing the need for patients to travel or spend money.

  • Health Awareness and Education

The clinic provides patients with information on healthy lifestyles, managing chronic conditions, and preventing illness.

Community Impact

Since opening its doors, the clinic has seen over 2,000 patients — many of whom had never previously had a professional medical check-up. For the elderly, unemployed, or uninsured, this has become a lifeline.

In many cases, the clinic has caught illnesses early, referred patients for specialised treatment, and provided ongoing monitoring and support that would have otherwise been inaccessible.

"The work of ICSA and IMASA here is not just about medicine — it’s about caring, dignity, and service."

A Model of Compassionate Care

Rooted in Islamic teachings of mercy and service, the ICSA/IMA Health Clinic operates with a simple yet powerful vision:

To provide high-quality, free healthcare to those who would otherwise go without.

Patients are treated regardless of race, religion, or nationality. The clinic reflects ICSA’s unwavering belief that serving humanity is one of the noblest forms of worship.
