Feed the Hungry Project
Introduction
In a country where poverty and unemployment remain major challenges, hunger is not just a condition — it’s a daily reality for millions of South Africans. The Islamic Circle of Southern Africa (ICSA) understands that no act of worship, study, or community service can flourish where there is an empty stomach.
That’s why ICSA’s Feed the Hungry Project is one of its most vital campaigns — aimed at fighting food insecurity and offering dignity, compassion, and relief to those who need it most. Inspired by the prophetic tradition and fueled by community support, this campaign has impacted thousands of families across South Africa.
Inspiration Behind the Project
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“If a believer feeds another believer in hunger, Allah will feed him from the fruits of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection. If a believer quenches the thirst of another, Allah will give him a pure drink on the Day of Resurrection. And if a believer clothes another believer, Allah will clothe him with green garments of Paradise.”
(Abu Dawud, 2:130 Hadith #1682)
The Feed the Hungry campaign is ICSA’s response to this profound teaching — a practical effort to fulfill our collective duty to alleviate hunger and suffering.
What We Do
ICSA runs food relief drives on a continuous basis, especially during periods of hardship, winter, Ramadan, natural disasters, and community-specific emergencies.
Key areas of focus include:
Monthly Food Parcel Distributions
Carefully packed parcels include essentials like rice, flour, maize meal, lentils, oil, sugar, tea, beans, salt, and canned foods.
Hot Meal Drives
On-site meal distributions for individuals without cooking facilities or the elderly who live alone.
Emergency Food Relief
Rapid response food distributions during floods, community displacements, and crisis events (e.g. 2022 Durban floods).
Regional Outreach
Distributions are not limited to urban centres. ICSA reaches townships, informal settlements, and rural communities— from Johannesburg to King William’s Town, Eastern Cape to Pietermaritzburg.
Where We’ve Made an Impact
- Johannesburg: Regular food parcel distribution to inner-city families, the elderly, and unemployed youth.
Lady Frere (Eastern Cape): Reaching rural areas where government food security networks are minimal.
Durban (KZN): Emergency food support after the 2022 floods devastated hundreds of families.
King William’s Town (Eastern Cape): Supporting local feeding schemes and school-based nutrition projects.
Pietermaritzburg (KZN): Ongoing support to informal settlements and single-parent households.
In every location, ICSA works through local teams and volunteers to ensure fair, respectful, and non-discriminatory distribution.
